Baby Star is one of Wellington's small business success stories. When Lisa Pomare and partner Cam Millar returned from their OE, Lisa was pregnant with their first child Ruby and resources were tight.

"We were searching the second-hand market for baby gear, but struggled to find anything of suitable quality", Lisa says. That was when the couple struck upon the idea of opening a second-hand baby gear store. "We knew how daunting those early stages of parenthood could be – we wanted to do something that would help other parents in that situation".

Baby Star expanded rapidly from those early stages - new product lines were introduced alongside the second-hand business and soon it outgrew its original premises in Ngaio "We shifted to Constable St Newtown and quickly outgrew that too", Lisa laughs, "When the current showroom in Adelaide road came available we packed up the family wagon and shifted shop again".

While the second-hand business may have given way to new products, Lisa is still eager to help those overwhelmed first-time parents: "We are still a family business - our staff are parents too". "Our focus may have changed from its second-hand roots, but we work hard to maintain a broad range of funky, yet affordable options."

The Baby Star product range includes all of the essentials for young families - baby furniture, clothing, maternity wear, buggies, carseats and infant toys. Brands include New Zealand favourites like organic clothing range Nature Baby, Hot Milk and Mandy Barker's Mama2B.
